About Me

Welcome to my blog! My name is Brittany Coyle and I am a self taught emerging artist from Victoria British Columbia.  Art has been an important part of my life since I was a young child. My family have played a huge role in encouraging me to pursue my dreams of being an artist. Well that is after I got a ‘real job’ as a Registered Nurse…Education was alway really important to me, and my dad encouraged me to go to University. He always slipped a Maclean's Magazine outlining the top universities in my pile of magazines, or I would find a sweatshirt from one of the schools in my room.  I got the hint and took furthering my education seriously. Instead of going to art school I decided to become a nurse, it wasn’t until after I graduated I realized how badly I needed a creative outlet. At that point I started painting, which has really helped me manage the demands and stress of being a nurse. I'm not disappointed that I didn't go to art school, it just wasn't in the cards for me. Nursing has taught me a lot and has made me appreciate living in the now as tomorrow is not promised to anyone. Nursing made me realize the importance of pursuing what you love and what you are passionate about.

I get my artistic talents from my mom who is also an artist. She has been an a huge influence and has been encouraging me to create for as long as I can remember. Many late nights spent together pouring over you tube to learn a new medium. My grandma was my biggest fan, she had my art plastered on the walls of her home and was the first one to 'like' my latest creations on Facebook. She was the one showing off my ribbons that I won for art in the fall fairs, and the first one to call a mall's colouring contest rigged because I NEVER won. Most of my paintings are inspired from sites around Vancouver Island, and from the many places I enjoy travelling to. When I travel I make a point of taking in the local art and culture. It’s amazing to see the creations that people come up with, and the variety of materials that they use.

I enjoy both impressionism and realism styles in a variety of mediums including acrylic, watcolour, oil, and coloured pencil.  I definitely struggle with impressionism the most. Going against all the rules of impressionism I think about every brush stroke I make, and I have to forces myself not to make my strokes look like the reference photo. I never usually get lost in the paining when I’m trying to paint loosely. I seem to be more at ease with a more realistic approach. I find it much more relaxing to complete realistic art, but I love the challenge of impressionism.

I hope you enjoy my posts, I would love to hear from you, please leave me your comments!
